Joseph S. Thompson, 84, 433 Bay St., died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.

Mr. Thompson was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Miami. He graduated in 1930 from Kemper Military Academy and received his juris doctorate degree in 1934 from Oklahoma University. He practiced law in Miami for over 60 years. He was a former Ottawa County prosecuting attorney and served with the Miami Industrial Development Authority.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Miami; Post No. 2,688, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Miami Masonic Lodge No. 140, AF&AM; and the Oklahoma Bar Association. He was a member of the advisory board of First National Bank and Trust Co. of Miami for over 40 years. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge and the Miami Utility Board. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant.

He married Letha Wall on Feb. 5, 1938, in Miami. She survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Joe Thompson and Jim Thompson, both of Miami; a daughter, Sandy Leake, Miami; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Miami. The Rev. Chuck Horton will officiate. Burial will be in GAR Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John F. Robinson, Herb Sherard, Chuck Goldenberg, Joe Weatherford, John Finley III and John F. Robinson Jr.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home, Miami.
