Leonard W. Lotts, 87, of Oelwein, died Saturday evening, May 16, 2009, at Grandview Health Care Center. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, by the Rev. John Kerr. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a public Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. by Hebron Lodge 374 AF&AM of Oelwein, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, with graveside military rites by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 of Oelwein. Leonard is survived by a son, Douglas (Gail) Lotts, and a daughter, Diana Kay Ristine, both of Marion; and four grandchildren, Lisa Lotts, Karen Lotts, Scott Ristine and Brian Ristine.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leonard William Lotts was born Dec. 24, 1921, at Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Russell O. and Helen Edith (Haskins) Lotts. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1940 and then entered Kemper Military School in Boonesville, Mo., graduating in 1942. Leonard married Kathryn Maxine Potter on Dec. 27, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Leonard was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving during World War II where he received the American Theatre Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. After his discharge from the Army Air Force in 1946, he attended Iowa State University in Ames. Leonard worked in the distribution office for the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. in Cedar Rapids for 31 years, retiring in May 1984. He was a member of American Legion Hanford Post 5 in Cedar Rapids, Crescent Masonic Lodge 25 AF&AM in Cedar Rapids, York Rite, Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, El Kahir Shrine Band, Philalethes Society, and the American Foresters Association. Leonard has been a resident of Grandview Health Care Center since January 2007.
