Services for Dr. Robert Joe Ray, 81 of Tyler, will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Allison Thompson officiating.
Private burial will be in Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.
Dr. Ray passed away, Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.
He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Grand Saline to William Marshall Ray and Chloe Terry Ray.
Dr. Ray was a graduate of Tyler High. He attended Kemper Military School and was in the U.S. Navy. Dr. Ray also attended SMU and Baylor and then went on to graduate with honors from the UT Dental School in Houston in 1956. He joined his father's orthodontics practice until retiring in 1993. He was a 50-year member of the Texas Dental Association. Dr. Ray enjoyed shooting skeet, boating, fishing, hunting, radio controlled model air planes and gunsmithing.
Dr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joanne McKenzie Smolik; and sons, Charles Steven Ray and David Allen Ray.
Dr. Ray is survived by his loving family including his wife of 41 years, Anita Ardinger Ray; sons, Robert Michael Ray of Denver, Colo., William Hardy Ray of Denver, Colo., Matthew Nowell Ray of San Antonio; daughters, Madeline Sue Ray of Denver, Colo., and Anita Allane Ray O'Neil of Dallas; grandchildren, Robert McKenzie Ray of Lewisville, Cari Anne Harshman of San Antonio, and Logan Allan O'Neil of Dallas; great-granddaughter, Aerial Harshman of San Antonio; brother, William Floyd Ray and wife Dorothy of Austin; niece, Debi Ray Stringer, and nephew, Terry Ray, of Austin.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Bill Clyde, Dr. Merwyn Pickle, Joe Johnson, Jim Jenkins, Jim Brettell and Dr. Paul Swinney.
Visitation will immediately follow the service at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler, 75703.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Basile of the Oncology/Hematology department of ETMC and the sweet nurses on Sixth South.
