Willis "Skip" J. Whitesell Jr., 64, of Champaign, Ill passed away peacefully at 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, after a brief battle with cancer.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 405 West Clark St., Champaign, with Reverend Father Stephen Willard officiating. A private family burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Champaign. Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Whitesell was born on April 13, 1945, in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was the son of Major Willis John and Leona M. Drabant Whitesell. He married Cindy L. Christy on May 30, 1964, in Hillsboro. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Kent Whitesell of Champaign, Willis J. (Jennifer) Whitesell III of Naples, Fla., and Carlin Whitesell of Miami Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Christy (Eduard) Forehand of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren, Madeline and Samuel Whitesell of Urbana, and Ethan, Elaina, and Hannibal Whitesell of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara (A.J.) Herges of Champaign and Deborah (Dennis) Alderman of Athens, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Whitesell attended Holy Cross Grade School and Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Mo. He graduated from Hillsboro High School.

He was a self-employed owner/operator of Skip's Service Station at the corner of Prospect and Kirby for over 30 years, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he was active in the St. Vincent dePaul Society.

He enjoyed watching sports, scuba diving, traveling, gardening, and grilling.

Memorials can be made to the Holy Cross Catholic Church or School.
